The meeting site for stuffing letters is in the city schools'
Professional Development Center located across the street behind the
high school auditorium. Some of you may remember this site as a former
banquet facility owned by Sir Robert Motel. The work space is made
available from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00pm.

We are making progress on the Stone scholarship effort. Largely
through the efforts of Marilyn Smith, we have class reps for
many of the classes during the Stone era. SInce many of the members
of those classes do not have email addresses, we will need to mail
letters to some 800-1000 grads.
We have scheduled a letter-stuffing party for October 12,
starting at 10 am, the room tba. This is an invitation for one and all to help,
if you can. I know many have day jobs, but for those who can, pls help us out.
Pls let me know if you can help. or just show up. If you will let me know,
i will send another email re the location.
There are a couple among our number who do not have email addresses and pls
let them know about this. mark leggett

Correction: Don Redding's class is 1955. That's the roster I have.

1) Have found a source to provide a roster for Darrell Moody's 1966 class.
Am expecting to have it in hand today or tomorrow.
2) I have no way to contact Neal Hughes. Please request they he obtain a roster, complete with e-mail addresses, and also a class rep(s) who will send out both types of our letter. When you have those rep names, please share their contact info with me.
3) Please tell Don Redding I have his 1953 class roster, complete with e-mails, in hand. He has a classmate, Maxine Lee, whose husband, Olin, has volunteered to be their class rep. Olin will be able to send both types of letters.
4) You and Frances may have discussed this, but my vote would be to simply sign the letters as being from The Scholarship Committee. The person from the respective class who addresses the envelopes can put their return address on them. This will help keep track, if some letters don't reach their recipient.
If on the other hand, you think return address is not needed, that will be fine.
These are all my " tidbits" for today.
Hope you and Lee are OK.

I took your letter and thoughts and tweeked them a little. No pride in my
tweeking so feel free to "rip it" ! I think it might be more powerful if
6-8 former Stone athletes, maybe more, signed our final letter. We could
get permission from those we think are most recognizable and simply attach
their names and AHS class years after the complimentary close. Just an
idea. Well, here's my tweek...
Dear Fellow Blue Comet,
We are writing to ask your help with a project many feel is long overdue.
Members of several Asheboro High School (AHS) class years are leading an
effort to establish an academic/athletic scholarship in memory of Coach Lee
J. Stone.
For those who experienced the Stone era, no introduction
is needed. For those "younger" former students and athletes, those outside
Coach Stone's 1955-1966 AHS years, you've no doubt seen, heard or read about
his legendary success. Maybe you even met him during his retirement years
in Asheboro.
Coach Stone took AHS athletics and ESPECIALLY football to a
higher competitive level than ever before. He is the only coach in AHS
history to be inducted into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame as well
as the North Carolina High School Hall of Fame. And, of course, was
inducted into AHS Sports Hall of Fame in its inaugural year.
Funding an endowed scholarship requires a minimum of $15,000. We
are confident this can be achieved and surpassed! Initial conversations
have been well received and we have begun receiving pledges giving us a nice
head start for this project !
Your check will be tax deductable and, of course, we will keep you apprised
as we journey toward our goal. Checks should be written to the Asheboro
City Schools Educational Foundation with Lee J. Stone Scholarship on the
memo line. Mail to Asheboro City Schools Educational Foundation, P.O. Box
1103, Asheboro, NC 27204-1103. Any amount will be helpful in reaching our
goal ! PLEASE BE SURE TO INCLUDE A RETURN ADDRESS SO WE CAN ACKNOWLEDGE YOUR CONTRIBUTION. (Changes in caps.)
THE LEE J. STONE SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE
Don, Frances,Neal and Marilyn, here is another revision incorporating
some of Neal’s suggestion. It was suggested that we not make this a
campaign with an ending date as many may wait until the end of the year
to make a contribution..There was thought given to a signature on the
letter , but who would sigh it. Maybe a class member from each class? A
generic Lee J. Stone Scholarship Committee. If anyone asks who the
committee is, we can give our names, minus Frances’ name and add others
we might think of, including Ronnie Winslow, Sparky and Ronnie Johnson,
David Jarrell, the Moody brothers, David Dalton and any others you might
thank of. Of course, we would seek permission. Do we need any
signatures or a generic signature?
Neal is working on an
article in the Courier and Marilyn is working tirelessly on class reps..
We might stuff envelopes for those classmates who do not have email
addresses and ask all whom we send emails to to forward to classmates
whose email addresses they might have. If we stuff, it would be the week
of October 9. Do we need to try to recruit others for this committee?
Any thoughts or comments?

Hi Eddie and Ann and Lloyd and Olin and Maxine
Mark Leggett and several friends have brought up the fact that once there was a scholarship given in the name of Lee Stone to a deserving student, but the money is gone The plan now is to bring this back to life. One step is to write to the classes and hope they can get an email out to their class members asking for help and contributions. A draft of such an email is below which several folks are in the process of reading and editing..
When the time comes, I believe we can use our email system to deliver the email to our class members assuming ok with you. I will tell Mark we will cooperate unless you have an objection.
The draft is in Mark's email below in bold. The purpose of my email today is to let you know what is in the works, although I am sure Mark would appreciate any suggestions you have. I plan to make a contribution soon.
If you have any comments, suggestions, edits etc let me and or Mark know.
Hope all is well with you . .
thanks
don

Here is a thought on the letter for the class reps to send.
tThere is no pride of authorship, so feel free to be brutal in your editing. Here is a thought on the letter for the class reps to send.
What i am trying to do is get the attention and a check. Marilyn and i have talked about sending to all classes, and there ie merit in that idea, but if we cannot make our goal with those who were in the Stone era, we cannot make it with other classes. And i do believe we will surpass our goal. Here goes:
Members of several classes in the Lee Stone era at Asheboro High School are ( banding together/ working on/trying to establish (pick one or add your own) a scholarship in memory of Coach Lee Stone. For those in the Stone era, he needs no introduction; for those who get this who were not on his era, he took athletics, especially football, to a higher level. Stone is the only coach in AHS history to be inducted into the NC Sports Hall of Fame as well as the NC High School Hall of Fame. Needless to say, he is also in the AHS Sports Hall of Fame. Funding for an endowed scholarship requires a minimum of $15000. We know we can achieve this and surpass it. We have commitments that give us a head start. Please make your tax-deductible contribution today. We promise to keep you apprised of out effort to meet this goal. Your check should be to the Asheboro City Schools Education Foundation with the Lee Stone Scholarship on the memo line and send to Asheboro City Schools Education Foundation, P O Box 1103, Asheboro NC 27204-1103. Thank you for your help and support. Marilyn, pls see if there is a person whose attention these should be addressed. And determine if we can update the contributors. To all, our hope is that we can find a class rep in each class who has the class directory and can send an email to each class member. Marilyn has already worked on this part. Plan B, yet to be determined, is how to follow up on the returned emails and those without emails. Also, do we contact businesses in Asheboro as well as business leaders for their support. Your comments are welcomed. mark
