Classmate

(edited by don for internet)
From: annahunter
Subject: My dad, Alex Coffin
Dear Family and Friends,
We hope that you all are enjoying your summer!  Some of you may have talked with Mom or Dad in the last several weeks, but if not, just a quick update…on July 1, my dad had surgery to remove a large abscess (as well as half of his liver) probably caused by his diverticulitis.  Although the surgery went remarkably well, Dad’s recovery has been difficult thus far . . . Thankfully, surgeons are happy with his recovery so far . .
Mom and Dad are incredibly grateful for your caring, well-wishes, and thoughtfulness. Mom specifically asks your forgiveness for not replying promptly to messages.  I will be sending updates occasionally to help Mom, and please feel free to contact me at any time with questions/thoughts, and I’ll be happy to share with Mom and Dad.  Thank you so much for your kindness to them!

. . . . thank you so, so much for caring for our family!

With love and gratitude,

Anna (Coffin) Hunter (Alex and Sonia’s daughter)

Little Darlin 1957 and 2007 by Diamonds and Elvis and Maurice Williams & the Zodiacs

From Eddie:

Some of you may be too young to remember...  but I think you will enjoy it too...

If you were alive in 1957, and old enough to enjoy Rock and Roll, you will probably remember the group, "The Diamonds" who had just launched their super hit "Little Darlin' ".  This should bring back a few memories.   Ahhh yes, the good old days.  I remember it well.  Nice to see some things get
ting better with age!

In 1957, The Diamonds had a hit with "Little Darlin".  47 and 50 years later, they were requested to perform at Atlantic City ..  This link leads to both performances.

Watch the first one then scroll down for the new one 50 years later.

Be sure to scroll to second performance. and further down for Elvis.

Furhter down for the real originals from Charlotte NC, Maurice Williams & the Zodiacs

Lloyd

Just to let everyone know the latest about Joan. They got the lab report back today and she does have cancer in the lymph nodes. It's not in the center of her chest but it is around the lung. The Doctor is going to try to let her come home this weekend but I really have my doubts. We can hope. She will be starting chemo in about three weeks and that will be done in Asheboro.

Her spirits are still good and I know she would love to hear from everyone. She is at Moses Cone in Greensboro in room 315. She can have visitors anytime except from 2:00-4:00.
Will keep you informed how things go.

Lloyd, Wanted to give you the latest about Joan. She had her surgery this morning. I talked to the surgeon when it was over and he said everything went great. He took out the top half of her right lung. They won't know about the lympth nodes until the report comes back but he said everything looked good.
Joan actually ate a few bites this afternoon, then told everyone to go home, she was tired  I can't imagine why.
I know her good report was the result of all the prayers, so don't stop until all this is over.
Good news from Gwen about Joan.

Lloyd, Just an update on Joan. She say the surgeon yesterday and the cancer had not spread to any other places, which is wonderful. He is going to take out half of her right lung. The surgery is scheduled for next Friday. I think that is the 11th. Everyone please keep her in your prayers.
 Will keep you updated

Lloyd, I have some bad news about Joan that I think we should share with everyone. They have found a large growing mass in her right lung. She went to the surgeon yesterday and he told her it was cancer. She goes to Wesley Long on Monday to have a brain scan and body scan to see if it has spread there. They are also going to do some kind of breathing test to see how she breathes. He told her it was not an impossible situation but very difficult. He said there would be radiation and chemo. We don't know about surgery yet. We all know that there are miracles in prayer and we need to be praying alot for Joan. I will keep you updated on how things go. I might add that Joan's spirits are very good. I'm sure she would love to get card from everyone. Gwen Jan 27, 2011

Rock N' Roll Quiz from Ben Witherington

Folks, here is a fun exercise. Select your favorite Musician from a pair and see what Ben Witherington III has to say about your choices. Start off with the quiz at the first link below, then move on to the analysis of each set of  ten selections. Confusing it sounds the way I described it, but just check out the first and second link below and it should be clear(er!).

By the way, Ben Witherington is a world-renowned Theologian,  and I have known him and his parents since  about 1963 beginning in High Point. His Dad (Ben Jr) moved to  Charlotte with BankofAmerica (well a predecessor) and I renewed our friendship through work and in my Sunday School Class. In the meantime, young Ben was getting educated at UNC and then earning a PhD and other degrees elsewhere. He now is on the faculty of a Bible College and travels  around the world lecturing. He and I have been to Panther and UNC games together, and he has many interests as you will see from his analysis of  musicians. He is a good guy and friend.

It begins   .  ..you, by manipulating the rockster machine can import your favorite bands to play for you for a day.  So who would you choose?

Take Me Back To The Fifties

Subject: one of the best of times..
From Diana . . . and others
For those of you who remember and for those who missed out on the experience of the 50's.
This is one of the best 50's video's I've seen. You will enjoy this. But only if you were in our generation or very close. . . ... And if you were not in this generation -- listen and eat your hearts out. It was one of the best of times..

C.J. Browne

Other than Alex Coffin, no other friend was as supportive of my athletic endeavors as CJ. I always loved it when he used his favorite nickname for me of "Pro."  Even without that, he was a good guy . . .don

C.J. and I were friends and for a while somewhat close. Of course I remember the football but a couple of other things. His dad was a constable and participated on still raids. Whenever they found a ‘good’ still his dad would keep a couple of half gallons for himself and to give away which he stashed in a closet under the stairs. Once when C J and I were going to W C ( Women’s College) in Greensboro to participate in an all state chorus for a couple of days we went into this closet and poured a little off several jars which we took with us. Just a wonderful memory of the fun of our youth. God Bless, Gus
