Betty Stout Albright, age 80, of Asheboro passed away on Friday, March 9, 2018 at Randolph Hospice House.
 Mrs. Albright was born in Snow Camp, NC on September 3, 1937 to Walter Coy and Virginia Stout, who preceded her in death.  Betty was retired from Kayser-Roth and was a member of Back Creek Friends Meeting.  Betty loved her family, her church, and serving at the church kitchen.
She is survived by her husband, Farris Albright; son, Dale Millikan of Lexington; and brother, Walter Coy Stout, Jr. of Asheboro.
The family will receive friends on Monday, March 12, 2018 from 1:00-2:00 pm at Pugh Funeral Home, 437 Sunset Avenue, Asheboro.  Funeral services will follow on Monday at 2:00 pm at the Pugh Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Michael Fulp, Jr. and Chaplin Bernie Raymond officiating.  Burial will be in Randolph Memorial Park.

Lee J. Stone Scholarship Raises Over $46,000 for Student-Athletes

ASHEBORO –  The Lee J. Stone Scholarship Committee would like to express great gratitude to the contributors of the Lee J. Stone Scholarship. In October, the committee sent letters to Asheboro High School alumni from the Stone era. The initial goal was to raise $15,000 to create an endowed scholarship for student-athletes at Asheboro High School. As of Friday, February 23, the total amount raised was $46,082.

“I’m incredibly humbled by the contributions made to the Lee J. Stone Scholarship,” said Frances Stone Sechler, Stone’s daughter. “My dad was unbelievably lucky. He was able to live in a town he loved where he was able to teach and mentor Asheboro High School students, all of whom he loved. His real passion, of course, was coaching ‘his boys’ and watching them grow into successful young men. I believe this wonderful scholarship is Asheboro loving him back,” she added.

Stone is the only coach in Asheboro High School history to be inducted into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame as well as the North Carolina High School Sports Hall of Fame. Additionally, he was inducted into the Asheboro High School Athletics Hall of Fame in its inaugural year Stone coached at AHS from 1947 to 1965, winning three state championships. In his 29 years of coaching, he never had a losing season.

The scholarship will be managed by the Asheboro City Schools Education Foundation, which was established in 1991 by Superintendent Bob W. Gordon. Once endowed, the scholarship will be available to both male and female students who have participated in any of the high school’s NCHSAA-sanctioned sports.
Rather than an application process, students will have to be nominated by school staff, faculty, and coaches. In addition to participating in a sport, nominated students will also have to meet four additional criteria:
* Academics: Places in the top 30 percent of class.
* Sportsmanship: Student athlete demonstrates throughout the entire athletic season ethical, appropriate, polite, and fair behavior while participating in a game or athletic event, shows respect for the rules of the game and the other players, is a gracious loser or winner, and promotes fellowship.
* Civic activities: Participates in community service projects or volunteer clubs during their high school career.
* College acceptance: Student must be accepted to a two or four-year college or university.

obituary of Darrell Cooper

Darrell Lee Cooper, age 83, of Asheboro passed away on Tuesday, February 13, 2018 at the Randolph Hospice House.

Mr. Cooper was born in Randolph County on December 27, 1934 to Harry P. and Ella Mae Routh Cooper. Darrell served his country in the Army National Guard. He was formerly employed with C.C. "Red" Howell & Sons Paint Contractors, where he was affectionately known as "Mongoose" and Asheboro Building Supply. He was retired from Hedgecock Builders Supply. Darrell was a member of West Bend United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia Howell Cooper; daughters, Ronda Gay Hunt of Asheboro, Fonda Kay Hughes and husband Ron of Wendell, and Jennifer Brower and husband David of Franklinville; sons, Chris Cooper and wife Mimi of Franklinville and Patrick Cooper and wife Dorothy of Asheboro; 10 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; brother, Harry M. Cooper of Asheboro; brother-in-law, John Howell of High Point; and sisters-in-law, Sue King and husband Mike of Carolina Beach, Lib Howell of Asheboro, and Julia Faye Howell of Asheboro.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, February 17, 2018 from 10:00-11:00 am at West Bend United Methodist Church, 1080 Albemarle Road in Asheboro. A memorial service will follow at 11:00 am at West Bend United Methodist Church with Rev. Kari Howard officiating.

Obituary for Mrs. Juanita Williams

Mrs. Juanita Mae Owens Williams, 80, of Asheboro, died Saturday, January 20, 2018 at Cross Road Retirement Community in Asheboro.

Graveside services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, January 23, 2018, at Oaklawn Cemetery, Asheboro, with Rev. Jon Hunter officiating.

A native of Randolph County, Mrs. Williams was born May 19, 1937, the daughter of the late of Ja Van and Mattie Craven Owens. She was retired from the Asheboro City Schools and had attended Sunset Avenue Church of God.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Williams was preceded in death by her husband, David Lee Williams, Sr., and her grandson, Andrew Williams.

Survivors include her son, David Lee Williams, Jr., and wife, Paula, of Holly Springs; sisters, Martha Owens Broadway and husband, Furman, of Southport, NC, Mary Magdalene Owens, of Asheboro; and grandson, Brandon Williams.

2017926 Margaret Ann Cox-Horton

ASHEBORO — Margaret Ann Cox-Horton, 80, of Asheboro passed away Monday, Sept. 25, 2017, at Randolph Hospice House.
Ann was born in Ramseur on May 26, 1937, to Earl Dewitt and Lucy Mae Julian Cox. She was employed as an office clerk and bookkeeper for over 40 years and was employed with Regional Consolidated Services for 15 years. Ann loved her church, Central United Methodist Church.
In addition to her parents, Ann was preceded in death by stepfather, Cicero Myrick; half sister, Maxine Brown; and half brother, Bill Kennedy.
Ann enjoyed hymns and country music.
She is survived by husband, Bill R. Horton; stepson, Harold Horton of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; sister, Virginia Richardson and husband Don of Asheboro; half sister, Mary Dee Fowler and husband Herb of Minnesota; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Sept. 30, at 11 a.m. at Central United Methodist Church, 300 S. Main St., Asheboro, with Dr. J.F. Howard Sr. and Dr. Bruce Dickerson officiating.

Dear Asheboro High School Alumni:

We are writing to ask your help with a project many believe is long overdue. Members of several classes from the Lee J. Stone era at Asheboro High School are banding together to establish a scholarship endowment in memory of Coach Stone.

For those of you from the Stone era, he needs no introduction. For those who aren’t, he took athletics, especially football, to a remarkable level. In doing so, he made successful men of young boys whose lives were changed for the better forever.

Stone is the only coach in AHS history to be inducted into the NC Sports Hall of Fame as well as the NC High School Sports Hall of Fame. Additionally, he was inducted in the AHS Sports Hall of Fame in it’s inaugural year.

We can think of no better way to carry on Coach Stone’s legacy than to establish a sports and academic scholarship endowment which will advance the lives of even more young people. The scholarship will be available to both male and female students of any official AHS sport who qualify.

Funding an endowed scholarship requires a minimum of $15,000.  We are confident this can achieved and surpassed!  Initial conversations have been well received and we have begun receiving contributions giving us a head start on this project!

We are making progress on the Stone scholarship effort. Largely 

through the efforts of Marilyn Smith, we have class reps for 

many of the classes during the Stone era. SInce many of the members 

of those classes do not have email addresses, we will need to mail 

 letters to some 800-1000 grads. 

We have scheduled a letter-stuffing party for October 12, 

starting at 10 am, the room tba. This is an invitation for one and all to help, 

if you can. I know many  have day jobs, but for those who can, pls help us out. 

Pls let me know if you can help. or just show up. If  you will let me know, 

i will send another email re the location. 

There are a couple among our number who do not have email addresses and pls 

let them know about this.
