20160722 Diana Update

Here is a copy of the Facebook post about Diana posted by Bob Falls:
“Once again we need your prayers! With Holly's father passing just a little over a month ago, her stepfather having transitioned into an assisted living facility while waiting and hoping for a hip replacement, Holly's Mom, Diana Johnson Burge, has had a stroke and is now in the hospital. She is undergoing a series of tests today and will begin speech therapy tomorrow. Holly is there with her now. Holly's Mom had just had a kidney stone procedure Wednesday morning and was home. Her stroke happened sometime during the night and the doctors say there was no connection. Love to all of you!”

Anyone who can, please follow-up on this and keep us posted. ~ Sandy

Have reserved C.J.'s Deli for July 28th at 11:30 for our class luncheon. I know this is a busy time but hope this is enough time after week of forth that everyone is back from vacation and settled in.
hope to see a big crowd then.

Had a grand crowd April 28, 2016 with about 40 people for our Quarterly  party at CJ's.. Guests included Jimmy and Wanda Tatum, Gary Simmons, and  Malcolm Lanier - from the class of 1956. We encourage them to return!

There were 33 people who signed in for the meeting- Betsy Glasgow, Betty Albright, Tonita Bulla, Nannette Wood, Fay Furr, Gwen Ferguson, JoElla and Roy Coble, Carol and Frank Schneider, Gary Simmons, Don Bristow, Wanda and Jim Tatum, Malcolm Lanier, Eddie and Carol Wilkes, Margaret Ann Cox Norman and Bill Norton, Diana Johnson Burge,  Donald Redding, Lloyd and Ann Hamlet, Jim and Lurlene Millikan, Fay Roberts, Olin and Maxine Lee, Edwin and Callie Chriscoe, Virginia Cooper, Margaret & C. R. Evans. Frank Snyder was also present but did not sign in.  Maybe others attended but did not sign in.  So, for sure, there were at least 34 individuals who attended.

Jim Tatum spoke at the recent funeral of  Coach Hawkins's and told of Coach asking Jim 10 or 15 years ago to speak  - and Jim did  a fine job.

Malcolm looks so fit and made  some of us envious as he says he now weighs 25 pounds less that when he played football for AHS . .  or was it 15 pounds, no matter  . . way to go Malcolm.

Next meeting perhaps will be the 2nd or 4th Thursday in July Eddie mentioned, depending on availability.

Eddie thanked Olin, Maxine and Ann for the work on the updated Directory and in communicating with the class on the meeting dates and time and said that without a doubt this communication is the life line on our continuation of the meetings. Olin and Maxine have stepped up to assist Ann and it really is appreciated. The current Directory dated 4-28-2016 later was emailed to  and a version distributed at the meeting to folks not having emails. Don mentioned that he had it on our Blog ( link is :  http://1955ahs.blogspot.com/   ).  User name and password are needed for confidential information and if you need it (again, ha) let me know by email or call me. Let Maxine and Olen know any corrections as time goes by.

Some mention was made of trying other locations and we were open to suggestions but most felt  the present  CJ's was working. One person did mention problem of parking and sure enough when we left the restaurant,   a class member was blocked in. I saved the day and maneuvered their car out of a very tight spot  without disturbing the lunch of the owner of the blocking car  - while showing some Southern Hospitality. We noticed the car was tagged in Mass.

I basically apologized for not having kept the Blog as  current as I once did. At one time I prepared notes such as this for each meeting but slacked off over the last few years;  I promised to do better but you can help but you can help by letting me know errors needing correction and other info. Also I hope you will enjoy the various links to information, some of it over 50 years old as I have been collecting it for a long time. If you have pictures you want to share certainly let me have them. Any time you see any information or pictures on  the Blog or Smugmug  that you think needs to be edited or removed let me know. The main link is to the Blog and from there the menus take you to lots of pother information.

A question was raised about having a Facebook page and it reminded me I tried to start one a few years ago. I must not have worked very hard at it as only Gus and I are members. I am not good at Face-booking and if you are interested in setting up  Facebook for us, let me know - or help me figure out what to do. If you search while in Facebook for "1955AHS" you can find it; it looks like it is on my Facebook account so I probably have done it wrong. Help me if you can.

I asked Olin for an update of his son, expecialy since it was a report of progress.

Under revision:
  • Son Mike was diagnosed with Myleodysplasia (bone marrow failure) about 4 years ago.  He had a bone-marrow transplant about 3 years ago.  There was not a “sibling” match, but there was a donor who matched very closely.  In the time since the transplant, he has been admitted to Duke Hospital a few time for stays ranging from a few days to a few weeks, with issues having to do with rejection of his transplant and a weakened immune system.  He continues to be monitored with regular visits to Duke.  On a recent visit, the lead physician at Duke remarked, “You are getting better - I wish I could take credit for that, but I can’t”.  That was a text message to me, that I shared with the class, because I received it at a recent AHS Class of 1955 Luncheon.  Mike and his sons are owners and managers of AVS Catering and Banquet Centre, on North Fayetteville Street.  Because of his illness Mike has turned the operation of the business over to his two sons, Justin and Zac Lee, who have been very successful in the transition.

Don Bristow invited everyone to see his art studio which is near his home. In the pasture area. We saw some of his paintings, his arrow head collections, and other items of interest. We  also saw his horses. A scenic area with views of Back Creek Mt.   Refreshments were also served. A good visit and fellowship. Thanks Don !

One last request - Let me know your birthdays (and anniversaries) if I do not have them. How will you know whether I have them or not? . . . well 1>  you can go to the link  in the menu on the Blog mentioning birthdays, or 2> you can just go ahead and send  to me anyway. If you do, this it will encourage me to update that listing and give me more incentive to keep working on this Blog
