20120419 Sagebrush for our Spring meeting on Thursday, April 19, at 11:30 am

We met at the Sagebrush for our Spring meeting on Thursday, April 19, at 11:30 am. with about 35 people present. Eddie mentioned the Hibachi Grill closed and asked if  Sagebrush  for future meetings was ok and there was no objection. Don R said he called Peggy P and she said to tell everyone hello.Several of our classmates  mentioned as having medical issues. Lloyd asked that folks keep  him informed of any illnesses or issues and if they prefer not to share info on internet. Benny Vick told an entertaining story of Jim Tatum and Coach Hawkins; a recording of it is close by. We were glad to have several guests including Squency Nance and spouses of class members . . .(let me know any names, please)

James E. Brewer, husband of class member Layrelnia Allred Brewer died Wednesday, April 4 at Randolph Hospital. A graveside service was held on Friday, April 6 at Oaklawn Cemetery with military honors.

ASHEBORO — James Edward Brewer, 76, of Asheboro, N.C., died Wednesday, April 4, 2012, at Randolph Hospital, Asheboro.
A graveside service is scheduled for 2 p.m., Friday, April 6, 2012, at Oaklawn Cemetery with the Rev. Daniel Hosler officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Randolph County Honor Guard.
A native of Montgomery County, N.C., Mr. Brewer was born Aug. 11, 1935.
He was the son of the late Claude Edward Brewer and Madie Laura Covington Brewer.
Mr. Brewer was retired from the U.S. Navy Facility at Cherry Point and was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War.
Mr. Brewer is survived by his wife, Layrelnia Brewer, of the home; sons, Kelly Brewer of Asheboro, N.C., Edward Brewer of Rocky Mount, N.C.; sisters, Marie Rhodes of Michigan, Myrtle Freeman, Ethel Sams, both of Star, N.C.; brother, Joe Brewer of Star, N.C.; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Westside Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department, 225 Westside Circle, Asheboro, NC 27205; or to the Randolph County Animal Shelter, 1370 County Land Road, Randleman, NC 27317.
Friends may call at Ridge Funeral Home from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m., on Friday, April 6, 2012.

Edwina Steelman (Gayle) Oxendine

GREENSBORO — Edwina (Gayle) Steelman Oxendine, 74, of Heartland Living and Rehabilitation, Greensboro, passed away Monday, March 5, 2012.
Gayle was born June 9, 1937 in High Point, the daughter of Irene Bryant Steelman Cranford and Archie L. Steelman. She graduated from Asheboro High School in 1955, and attended East Carolina Teachers College (now East Carolina University) for two years. She was retired from Lorillard Tobacco Company with 37 and a half years of service. Gayle enjoyed photography, especially taking pictures of children and animals, and sewing and crafts.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Robert Oxendine.
Gale is survived by her cousin Julia Gregson, of Danville VA; Julia's children Katherine Smith, also of Danville, and Jim Gregson of Wilmington NC; an aunt, Vivian Bryant of Columbus NC; sisters-in-law Sadie Clark of Wilmington and Peggy (and Gene) Clark of Orange Park FL, and their daughters, Genia and Kristy; Rex and Dorothy Clark of Wilmington; Betty Roderick and Lee, Tracy and Debbie; Donald Clark and Thomas Clark all of Wilmington and Annette Hunt of Fairmont. She also leaves behind many friends, co-workers, neighbors and her "family" at Heartland.
Graveside rites will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, March 9 at Guilford Memorial Park, 6000 High Point Rd., Greensboro.
Hanes Lineberry Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements.
In honor of Gayle's love of animals, most especially her beloved dog Atlas, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Guilford County Animal Shelter, P.O. Box 8, Jamestown, NC 27282.

Phil Hudson

If you subscribe to Our State Magazine you read Phil's daughter Elizabeth's editorial comments about her dad. For 17 days Phil was in the ICU at Moses Cone Hospital on a ventilator. He had surgery for a diseased lung and lost 18% of his lung to cancer. Lloyd talked to Elizabeth today and learned that Phil has been home for two weeks now and is doing better. 20111021 - Virginia Update

Virginia called with an update on her condition. Her hamstring muscle was torn loose in three places. She has been released from Universal Health Care and is at Harry Craven's, 879-4054, for home health and physical therapy for 2 to 3 months since she can't stay by herself. In a couple of weeks they will know the condition of her leg, but therapy seems long term. She thanks everyone for their thoughts and prayers and hopes to be bicycling in the spring. Lloyd
